At our school, reading is taught through a structured and progressive approach that supports children from their earliest phonics learning to advanced comprehension skills. In Key Stage One, we use Rocket Phonics to give pupils a strong foundation in decoding, blending and early reading fluency. As children progress, we develop their understanding further through Reading VIPERS—a framework that focuses on Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising. Through VIPERS questioning and activities, pupils learn to explore language, think deeply about texts and build the key skills needed to become confident, thoughtful and enthusiastic readers.
